these things usually get two camps - a "this thing sucks ass" camp and a "this thing rocks" camp. I'll stay neutral and just tell you what's there:

no frills here - comes in cardboard wrapping and the songs are not labeled.

sound is heavy, but very nice. the mix between members is perfect imho.

Alabama Getaway - decent version. a few nice Brent licks, Jerry never really gets rolling with the axe though.
Promised Land - standard but good.
Jack Straw - a bit sloppy to start, but the jam > "Jack Straw from Wichita" crescendo is outstanding. great version.
Deal - sloppy and it would be another year before the jam we all know and love is incorporated into this tune. not for me.
Dancin - a fun jam. transition to FT is pulled off nicely.
Franklin's - best ever. outstanding Garcia vocals. outstanding Garcia licks. Brent and Phil lead the way to the tremendous Jerry explosion that ends this thing of beauty.
Wharf Rat - very nice. nice vocals. the boys come together beautifully for the jam. a top 5 version imho. good transition to Miracle.
I Need A Miracle - standard but very solid. Jerry rips it up pretty good. transition to Bertha is nice.
Bertha - standard
Good Lovin - ok I guess.

Shakedown - very well played. perfect Garcia vocals. Brent is active and effective throughout. main jam is good.
Passenger - standard.
Terrapin - standard but very nice.
Playin - well played first verse. jam is spacey, but uninspiring imo. no second verse or reprise.
NFA - average, nice transition into Dew.
Morning Dew - stunning. Jerry really nails the vocals, and destroys the place with the lead (as a fellow poster would say).

I'll report on the bonus disk later.

Bonus Disk -

China Cat > Rider - average China Cat. Jerry can't seem to find the strings on the Rider (odd selection for this "best of").
Lost Sailor > St - standard
Althea - very nice
Estimated Prophet - Bob nails this one vocally, and the jam is huge. outstanding version.
He's Gone - pretty standard, but it flows along so nicely. worked very well for me.
jam - starts with a touch of distortion, hints at Caution next, then goes into a full-fledged Gloria jam. good stuff.

Hey, thanks for whetting my appetite D&M. I'm on the back of the bus, having elected USPS media mail shipment.

Mine came today. I'm really enjoying it, but have not heard the whole thing yet. The compilation approach works well in my opinion. The Shakedown was excellent as was the Playing in the Band. This will go into regular rotation on my CD player for a while.

When was the last time you saw Mozart conduct one of his masterpieces?...the same will hold true for the GD. These compilations are not for Heads like ourselves, never could be and Rhino is not targeteing us for these purchases. But just as Skeletons from the Closet piqued our curiosity and was one of the first albums that we all purchased, the same hold true for these releases. The only fly in the ointment is that the GD needed to be seen live, but I'm sure that with virtual reality and holographic displays, one day you'll be able to take a "road trip" with all the adventure and pitfalls, to Hershey Park, get rained on, trip your brains out and feel those wondeful opening notes to CR&S
